Software development Agile methods

Agile methods minimize risk by developing software in short time boxed iterations: each including the tasks necessary to release mini-increments of functionality: planning, requirements analysis, design, coding, testing, and documentation. Agile methods emphasize real time communication, preferably face-to-face, over written documents. (resulting in some criticism of agile methods as being undisciplined hacking).

The Agile Alliance is a non-profit organisation that supports individuals and organisations who use agile approaches to develop software. The priorities are articulated in the Manifesto for Agile Software Development.

Examples of 'Agile methods' include eXtreme Programming (XP), SCRUM, Crystal and at from a slightly more corporate perspective Dynamic Systems Development Methodology (DSDM).

Capability Maturity Model (CMM)

Capability Maturity Model Integration (CMMI)

Capability Maturity Models provide a framework for evaluating and improving various processes using a scale of 1-5. It was developed by the Software Engineering Institute (SEI). CMMs have been developed for a range of disciplines including: systems engineering, software engineering, software acquisition, workforce management and development, and integrated product and process development. To address the problem of several CMMs, and to provide a more focused approach to improvement, the SEI developed "Capability Maturity Model Integration" (CMMI).

Rational Unified Process
